Marilyn Strickland was elected Mayor of Tacoma in 2009. Strickland has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington with a major in Sociology, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Clark-Atlanta University. She served as the Development Officer for the Tacoma Public Library, as a member of the Board of Directors for the Grand Cinema and has held management positions with the American Cancer Society, Starbucks Coffee Company and JayRay Creative.
Strickland serves on the boards of the Public Safety, Human Services & Education Committee, the Pierce County Regional Council, and is a member of the Government Performance and Finance Committee. She also represents the city on the board of Safe Streets and the Pierce County Regional Council. Strickland is a member of the Tacoma Urban League, the Black Collective and serves on the board of KBTC Public TV Association. She is also on the advisory board of the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department’s Project ACHIEVE.
