Palmer Scholars Launches Green Stormwater Infrastructure Program

Published May 27, 2025 in Articles

Palmer Scholars, a partner in the WorkSource Pierce system, launched its newest program — the Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Program. Designed to equip young adults with the skills and experience needed for sustainable careers, this program offers a unique blend of classroom instruction and hands-on fieldwork in environmental conservation and infrastructure.

The GSI Program is an 8-week intensive training that combines:

  • Classroom Learning: Two days per week focused on sustainable water management practices.
  • Fieldwork: One day per week of practical experience, including site visits and hands-on projects.
  • Career Support: One-on-one sessions with Navigators for job placement assistance and career planning.
  • Supportive Services: Financial incentives and additional resources to ensure scholar success.

The GSI Program is a collaborative effort developed in partnership with The Nature Conservancy and other regional organizations, including the Pierce Conservation District, City of Tacoma, Clover Park Technical College, and Workforce Central. This coalition addresses workforce sustainability challenges by preparing a new generation for careers in green stormwater infrastructure and urban forestry.

The program in May celebrated the graduation of its second cohort, bringing the total to 15 graduates.

A third cohort is slated to begin in September. To learn more about enrollment and upcoming sessions, visit www.palmerscholars.org/fitforme
