WorkSource JBLM Offers Warm Hand to Transitioning Service Members

December 1, 2022

The WorkSource JBLM team offers a unique set of services catered to our military community in Pierce County. The WorkSource office, Located in the Hawk Center on JBLM, opened in 2017 and was the first of its kind in Washington State. Positioned on the second floor of the building that also houses JBLM transition services, this location allows our teams of workforce professionals to connect with service members exiting from the military and their families.

Many of the WorkSource team members also have a military background, being former military or spouses of military members, which helps them better understand the challenges their customers are facing.

WorkSource JBLM has found great success in assisting customers like Michael, who was transitioning out of the military and looking for a new career. He worked one-on-one with his career advisor to determine what he needed to achieve his goal. He found a program at Clover Park Technical College that provided training on becoming a Supply Chain Professional. He was the first person to complete the program and is now working in his next career as a Lean Solutions Specialist.

This WorkSource team also works closely with military spouses and family members like Ivelina, who had not had a job in several years and saw that as a challenge. She was accepted into the WorkSource Spouse Ambassador program, and she was able to gain marketable skills. Her career advisor helped her work on her resume and interview skills, gave tips to build her confidence, and assisted with job search and networking. Ivelina was able to use the training and resources provided to her to get hired as a paraeducator.

Customers have access to a wide variety of services offered by a network of workforce development service providers. While WorkSource JBLM primarily focuses on serving those leaving the military and their families, it is a partnership of state, local, and nonprofit agencies designed to help all working-age job seekers. The network of partners includes Employment Security Department, Veterans Affairs, Department of Social & Health Services, Career TEAM, VIE 25, Goodwill, USO, Aviation Pathways, and WorkEx.

Services available to customers include career assessment tools, labor market information, career readiness workshops, skills translation, resume assistance and review, interview skills, internships and apprenticeships, job search tools and assistance, career and technical retraining assistance, veterans industry education internships, Aeronautical Technology Certification (A&P), and assistance filing for service-connected disability.
