Every great endeavor begins with a purpose — a reason that drives us forward. At WorkForce Central, our purpose is clear: to help create a thriving community where businesses grow, workers succeed, and opportunities abound for everyone.

This ideology is the foundation of our Community Reinvestment Programs; not just providing grants or training but also creating meaningful opportunities to invest in people, businesses, and the future of our community.

Start with Why: Empowering Small Businesses

Why do small businesses matter? They’re more than just engines of economic growth; they’re the heartbeat of our neighborhoods. They create jobs, foster innovation, and connect us as neighbors and consumers. Supporting small businesses complements the contributions of larger businesses by adding balance and diversity to the local economy, ensuring it remains vibrant and adaptable.

Large businesses often bring scale, resources, and infrastructure that benefit our communities in profound ways. Small businesses, on the other hand, bring a personal touch, a deep connection to their neighborhoods, and a capacity for innovation that reflects the unique needs and character of the community. Together, they create a dynamic and thriving ecosystem where everyone benefits.

Businesses like Campfire Coffee, La Paloma, and The It Factor Hair Studio are the lifeblood of Pierce County. Yet, small businesses like these often face barriers that make growth difficult—limited capital, lack of resources, and unexpected challenges. Further, when grant money DOES become available, the process is typically complicated, cumbersome, and feels alienating.

That’s why our Small Business Programs were created with intentionality in inclusion. They’re more than just funding opportunities—they’re tools to help businesses grow and thrive without over-complicating the process. These programs enable business owners to take bold steps forward, whether it’s purchasing equipment, training staff in new processes and skills, or bringing in fresh talent. When a local business owner upgrades their operations, or a service provider invests in innovation, it strengthens more than just their bottom line—it strengthens Pierce County as a whole.

Investing in People: Training for Growth

Our Employee Training Grants are guided by another powerful “why.” People are a business’s greatest asset. The skills, creativity, and potential of a workforce determine whether a business will thrive or merely survive. When employees feel valued and invested in, the impact resonates far beyond the workplace.

These grants fund training that helps workers sharpen their skills, build confidence, and unlock their potential. They help employers grow stronger teams, foster innovation, and position themselves for long-term success. It’s not just about technical knowledge or certifications; it’s about creating a culture of empowerment, adaptability, and continuous improvement.

The Ripple Effect

When small businesses and workers succeed, the entire community flourishes. A thriving local business doesn’t just create jobs—it inspires others in our community to dream big. A skilled, confident worker doesn’t just advance their own career; they uplift their family and inspire their peers.

The stories that emerge from these programs are a testament to their impact. Businesses like Break Through Construction and the Pickled Chef have turned their ambitions into reality, growing their teams and their operations.
